Boating Accidents on the Rise
The total number of boating accidents in 2016 was 701. This represents the highest number of annual boating fatalities in the last five years. The fatality rate of 5.9 deaths per 100,000 boaters represented an increase of 11.3 percent from the rate of 5.3 deaths per 100,000 boaters in 2015. There were 75 more deaths in 2016 than in 2015. Additionally, 2,903 injuries were sustained in boating accidents in 2016, up from 2,613 in 2015. The top five primary contributing factors in boating accidents based on information provided by the United States Coast Guard include:
