Las Vegas, NV — CPSC Recall: Kiwi Recliners Pose Fire Risk Due to USB Port Overheating

Product recall with a man in suit holding the letter "R" on a tablet device.

Las Vegas, NV (July 24th, 2025) – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of more than 18,000 Kiwi Electronic Recliner and Swivel Gliders sold under the Babyletto brand. These chairs feature built-in USB ports designed to charge phones and other devices while in use. A flaw in the power supply may cause the units to overheat, potentially leading to fires, property damage, or burn injuries.

What Is the Kiwi Recliner Recall?

Bexco Enterprises Inc., the Canadian company behind the Babyletto brand, issued a voluntary recall of its Kiwi Electronic Recliner and Swivel Glider. The recall comes after at least 12 reports of the chairs overheating, including one confirmed incident of fire.

While no injuries have been reported, the risk is real, especially considering these chairs are often used in nurseries and bedrooms where babies and toddlers may be sleeping.

Product Details

  • Brand: Babyletto
  • Model Prefix: EW20200
  • Retailers: Amazon, Target, Walmart, Pottery Barn Kids, Wayfair, and others
  • Date Range Sold: September 2022 – February 2024
  • Recalled Units: Approximately 18,750

Affected chairs have a fabric label under the seat or on the bottom cushion that includes the model and batch number. All units with a USB charging port fall under the recall.

What’s the Risk?

The issue lies in the chair’s USB power supply, which can overheat during normal use. This kind of defect is particularly hazardous for a few key reasons:

Highly Flammable Environment

Upholstered furniture, curtains, crib sheets, and rugs can all act as fuel if a fire starts near a recliner.

Proximity to Children

These chairs are typically used while feeding, rocking, or holding infants and young children, who may be unable to escape or alert someone if something goes wrong.

Nighttime Use

Many parents use gliders overnight, making it harder to detect early signs of overheating like strange smells or excessive warmth.

What Should Consumers Do if They Have a Recalled Recliner or Swivel Rocker?

The CPSC recommends the following steps for anyone who owns one of the recalled chairs:

  • Unplug the chair immediately from any power source.
  • Stop using the USB charging function altogether.
  • Contact Babyletto for a free repair kit, which includes a replacement USB power supply and installation instructions.

Bexco has also created a dedicated recall page with further guidance and a tool to verify whether your model is part of the recall.

Why These Recalls Matter for Nevada Families

Las Vegas homes are filled with electronic devices and modern furniture that often prioritize convenience over safety. Nevada’s hot, dry climate can increase the severity of home fires, and indoor environments that are already warm may accelerate how quickly electronics overheat.

This isn’t the first time products designed for nurseries have posed risks. From faulty crib bumpers to inclined sleepers and drop-side cribs, many family-friendly products have been pulled from the market only after serious harm occurred.

Do You Have a Product Liability Claim in Nevada?

If a recalled or defective product caused injury, damage, or financial loss, you may have a right to file a product liability case under Nevada law.

Nevada Product Liability Basics

Nevada follows a strict liability standard for defective products. As such, a company can be held legally responsible for damages if the product was defective and that defect caused harm. It doesn’t matter whether the company acted carelessly. What matters when proving a defective product injury is whether the product was unreasonably dangerous when used as intended or in a way that could be anticipated.

A product may be considered defective under Nevada law if something went wrong during the design, manufacturing, or marketing process. A design defect means the product was inherently unsafe based on how it was conceived. A manufacturing defect occurs when a product becomes dangerous due to errors in production or assembly, even if the design itself was sound. A failure to warn happens when a company does not provide adequate instructions or cautionary statements about known risks, leaving consumers unaware of potential dangers.

In cases involving overheating, such as with the Kiwi recliner, the root cause may involve a defect in design or production—or even a combination of both. If the company failed to identify and address the risk before distributing the product to consumers, it may also face claims for failing to provide adequate warnings.

Who Can Be Held Responsible?

Liability for a defective product doesn’t rest solely with the manufacturer. In Nevada, responsibility may extend to any party involved in the distribution chain. That includes not only the company that produced the product, but also those who sold it, supplied components, or helped bring it to market.

For example, if the overheating issue in the Kiwi recliner stemmed from a faulty USB component made by another supplier, both the manufacturer and the component maker could face legal action. Retailers who sold the product, whether large chains like Amazon or Target or smaller third-party vendors, may also be named in a claim, especially if they continued to sell the item after the defect became known.

The key question is whether any of the involved parties played a role in placing an unreasonably dangerous product into the hands of consumers. Under Nevada law, if that product causes injury, property damage, or other harm, each of those entities may be held accountable.
