Las Vegas, NV — FDA Recall: Eggs Recalled After Illnesses, Hospitalizations Due to Salmonella Outbreak

Grocery shop with food on shelves with food recall alert texts.

Las Vegas, NV (June 10th, 2025) Eggs distributed by Almark Foods, doing business as August Foods Inc., have been recalled after testing positive for Salmonella. The recall includes brown cage free eggs and brown certified organic eggs distributed in Nevada and several other states. If consumed, these eggs may cause serious and sometimes life-threatening illness, especially in young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.

At George Bochanis Injury Law Offices, we stay on top of major food recalls and public health alerts that put Las Vegas residents at risk. If you or a loved one became seriously ill after consuming contaminated eggs, or any other unsafe food product, we encourage you to reach out. You may be entitled to compensation, and our team is here to help you hold negligent producers, distributors, and retailers accountable.

What Eggs Are Included in the Recall?

The recalled eggs include both brown cage-free and certified organic brown eggs sold under a number of brand names. The packaging for this contaminated product includes both fiber and plastic cartons marked with Julian dates 032 through 126 and plant numbers P-6562 or CA-5330.

The full list of affected lot numbers and expiration dates is available through the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website. If your eggs are part of the recall, do not eat them. Return the product to the point of purchase or dispose of it safely.

Of those who became ill, most reported eating eggs or egg-containing dishes in the days before their symptoms began. The onset of illness dates ranges from February 24 through May 17, 2025. In addition to those reported, many cases likely remain unreported, as not everyone with Salmonella infection seeks medical care or gets tested.

Even though these eggs were sold in retail locations, they were also likely used in commercial food service. This raises concerns that some consumers may have been exposed through meals prepared in restaurants, delis, school cafeterias, or institutional kitchens.

What Prompted the Egg Recall?

The recall of more than 1.7 million eggs was prompted by a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis that has sickened at least 79 people across seven states, including Nevada. The outbreak has lead to at least 21 hospitalizations, according to the FDA. No deaths have been reported so far, but public health officials continue to monitor the situation as more cases may surface.

After reports of illnesses, the contaminated eggs were traced back to August Egg Company, based in California. The company voluntarily issued the recall, after traceback investigations led to the company’s production facility. Genome sequence testing by the FDA confirmed the strain of Salmonella found in the facility matched that responsible for causing the illnesses reported across the country.

How Do You Know If You Have a Salmonella Infection From Contaminated Eggs?

Most people infected with Salmonella develop symptoms within 6 hours to 6 days after eating contaminated food. In the case of the recent egg recall, that could mean symptoms began anywhere from a few hours after eating the eggs to nearly a week later.

The infection, known as salmonellosis, primarily affects the intestinal tract and can cause a range of uncomfortable, and sometimes dangerous, symptoms.

What Are Common Signs of a Salmonella Infection?

Symptoms of a Salmonella infection can vary in intensity, but they typically involve the digestive system. Some of the most common signs of Salmonella Enteritidis include:

  • Diarrhea, sometimes bloody
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Stomach cramps
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Chills

In many cases, the illness lasts four to seven days and resolves without medical treatment. However, some people develop more severe complications that require hospitalization. Those at a higher risk of serious illness include young children, adults over 65-years-old, pregnant individuals, and people with weakened immune systems.

In these populations, Salmonella can spread beyond the intestines to the bloodstream and other parts of the body. Consequently, consumers may suffer sepsis, reactive arthritis, or other long-term complications.

If you’ve recently consumed eggs or dishes containing eggs, especially in one of the affected states like Nevada, and you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s important to seek medical care, whether visiting your primary care physician, or a local hospital, such as University Medical Center. A healthcare provider can test for Salmonella infections, and begin treatment if necessary. A lab confirmation of the infection may also help support a legal claim if your illness was linked to recalled food.

Can You Sue for Salmonella Illness Caused By Contaminated Eggs?

If you were sickened after consuming eggs that were later recalled for Salmonella contamination, you may be able to file a product liability lawsuit. Food producers and distributors have a duty to ensure their products are reasonably safe for consumption. When they fail, and illness or injury results, they may be held legally accountable.

To prevail in a Salmonella food poisoning case, a claimant typically must show:

  • The contaminated product caused the illness
  • The product was defective or unsafe when it left the manufacturer or distributor
  • The illness led to measurable damages, such as medical bills, lost income, or pain and suffering

These types of claims often fall under strict liability in Nevada. Therefore, you may not need to prove negligence, only that the product was defective and caused harm.

Who May Be Held Liable in an Egg Recall Lawsuit?

Several parties may share responsibility when contaminated eggs make it to consumers, including:

  • The egg producer or packager, like August Foods Inc.
  • Distributors or wholesalers
  • Retailers and grocery chains
  • Food service operators who used the eggs in their dishes, such as a hotel that gives you food poisoning

In some cases, third-party contractors or inspectors may also be liable if they failed to identify or report contamination during quality control checks.

A Las Vegas personal injury lawyer can help identify the responsible parties and pursue compensation on your behalf.

Are There Deadlines to File a Claim in Nevada?

In most personal injury cases, including those involving food poisoning, Nevada law imposes a two-year statute of limitations. As such, you typically have two years from the date of illness or diagnosis to file a lawsuit.

However, there are exceptions that may shorten or extend that period, especially if the contaminated product was consumed as part of a restaurant meal, pre-packaged item, or institutional food service.

It’s important to act quickly, especially when evidence like packaging, receipts, or leftover food may degrade or be lost.
